I bought "If I Should Love Again" after Barry performed the cover song at one of his concerts. It is such a beautiful song, especially the piano section in the middle. "Old Songs," "Somewhere down the road," and "Fools get lucky" are also some of my favorite tunes of this album. Definitely a great gift for a Manilow fan! This is mushy-gushy, heartbreakingly-beautiful, "classic" Barry at his best.

Ballads abound on this one, true Barry at his best; the Master of love songs. "The Old Songs" was a huge hit, it's a cover and Barry's version was the more popular, "Let's Hang On" was a hit overseas and Barry's treatment of this cover features his obligatory stacked vocal, "If I Should Love Again" is an amazing song but I like the alternate take on the boxed set, I feel that version has a more refined vocal and a bit of a bigger arrangement. "Somewhere Down The Road" was a huge hit and is similar in arrangement to "I Made It Through The Rain" released a year earlier and hails from the album "Barry" released in 1980. This cd was one of the Barry remasters in the late 90's utilizing 24-bit technology and the overall sound is good but a bit muted.

Barry Manilow is known as the master of mushy love songs and that's okay because he's never afraid to go right to the heart. The material here while not as commercial as "Trying To Get The Feeling" or "Mandy" certainly stands on it's own as melodic and meaningful. It's not going to go over big with the rap and hard rock fans but Mr Manilow knows there are a lot of hopeful romantics out there and that's who buy his recordings. It's worth noting that he is a master when it comes to doing lush beautiful arrangements. The title song from the collection "If I Should Love Again" reminds me of one of my favorite Manilow songs "Could it Be Magic" a very Classical Music sound with a touch of "Gone With The Wind" flavor. Some might think it's a bit over the top but so is the whip cream on you favorite Sundae. The up tempo numbers also stand on their own "Let's Hang On" the Four Seasons classic allows Barry to have some fun with multi tracking and singing all the parts himself. He performs "You're Runnin' Too Hard" with just the right amount of Brooklyn Soul. This collection my not win Barry Manilow any new fans it's not very commercial sounding. It doesn't disappoint his existing fan base who like me treasure some of the album cuts and enjoy them even more than the hits. The album cuts are never just filler Manilow gives every song his all.
