Finally! ONJ fans have been waiting for the return of this 1974 album for decades! It went out-of-print back in the ‘80s and finding a copy on CD became so rare than when they did turn up on the second-hand market they sold for astronomical prices!
This was Olivia’s first #1 album. It hit the top spot on both the pop and country album charts. The title track was released in the spring of ‘74 and went to #5 on the pop charts and #2 on both the country and adult contemporary charts. The follow-up single, “I Honestly Love You” was released in the fall of ‘74 and became Olivia’s first #1 pop single and kicked off an string of eight consecutive #1 hits on the adult contemporary chart! It also won the Grammy award for 1974’s Record of the Year.
Thanks to the success of these two singles, Olivia was also awarded the CMA award for Female Vocalist of the Year in ‘74 beating out Dolly Parton in the same year she released both “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You!” Olivia’s success in both the country and pop fields helped other country artists branch out into pop music, including Dolly. The country/pop success of artists such as Shania Twain and Taylor Swift can be traced back to the blurring of genre boundaries that ONJ (and Linda Ronstadt) pioneered.
Other highlights include “Country Girl”, “Home Ain’t Home Anymore”, “Changes” (written by Olivia) and her cover of “God Only Knows.”
