  • The Music In Film Is Better For Traditionalists

I have performed in the Nutcracker ballet for 14 years (12 years as an adult), so I am very particular about the soundtrack for it. I knew that Disney's film version would be a different take on the story, while still paying tribute to it. I can see why there are just as many disappointed reviews as there are rave reviews for the soundtrack. When you watch the film there are many nods to the original music ("Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"), but most of the beloved original music is not in this soundtrack. So, if you are a traditionalist don't expect this soundtrack to satisfy. However, there are 3 tracks worth a listen: "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" (which is both the music for the opening of the party scene as well as the film), "Mouserinks" (which includes music from the Arabian dance - aka "Coffee"), and "The Nutcracker Suite" (although it's listed at the end of the soundtrack, it's actually the music for the short ballet that is performed for Clara about midway in the film, which includes music from the snow scene and the ballet scene). Perhaps Disney will include a single of the film's version of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy?" Although the soundtrack was a disappointment for me, the film is worth it for anyone who loves the ballet and/or the music.

For a movie based on a musical suite, you would expect the music to be more inspired, especially if they were only going to give a nod to the original score and simply rewrite the whole thing. What's probably most disappointing is that the track from the trailer, arguably the most impressive version of that song to date, is not on this soundtrack.

Such a beautiful combination with Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Beautiful and lovely to listen to.
  • Beautiful work for a great movie

Many people look at this and expect a more traditional version of the Nutcracker. Think again, because the soundtrack is wonderfully created to combine the exquisite music we all know with the twists that make it something perfectly suited for the film it was made for. This soundtrack earned every last star I’m giving and is wonderful in its own right.
  • Wonderful Work!

I love how they blended some of the original scores, and added new ones. Not surprising, but no need to whine because they didn’t copy and paste the original. Of course it’s gonna sound different. And it sounds very good! Really love the end credits song too, probably my favorite Disney end credits song since Kenny Loggins “Your Heart Will Lead You Home”. Just gotta appreciate this new orchestra masterpiece. Such a good movie and nicely done soundtrack. Way to be fresh

The music in the trailers was superb but the soundtrack I just listened to is subpar at best. Highly disappointed.

How are you going to have a nutcracker movie and not even have “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” in the soundtrack. They had an excellent score for the trailer, but for whatever reason you will not find that in this soundtrack. I waited MONTHS for this. In fact, I never write reviews on here, but I am so angry about not having one song. To be fair, music is decently written, but not enough real nutcracker music. Next time don’t tease everyone with something incredible in the trailer that’s not even in the soundtrack. That’s like putting an epic scene in the trailer and then it’s not in the movie. 1 Star.

When I first watched the trailer I was so excited for this soundtrack to come out! Now that it has..it is nothing like I expected. Besides the very minimal few notes from Tchaikovsky’s original work, it doesn’t have any of those amazing pieces that I was excited to hear. If you were wanting to hear your favorite Nutcracker pieces with a Hollywood twist look else where.
